Mount Kenya vs Kilimanjaro: Which Should You Climb?
Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak and a bucket-list name. Mount Kenya is its quieter, more technical neighbor. Both are stunning, but the right choice depends on your fitness, budget, and what kind of experience you want.
Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895 meters and is a non-technical trek on its main routes. It is famous, well-supported, and offers a true summit — Uhuru Peak. However, it is also crowded, more expensive, and located in Tanzania, which means longer travel logistics from Nairobi.
Mount Kenya rises to 5,199 meters. The highest trekking point is Point Lenana at 4,985 meters, which requires no technical climbing. The mountain is wilder, less crowded, and far more affordable from Nairobi. Routes like Chogoria and Sirimon pass through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacier valleys.
For photographers and nature lovers, Mount Kenya often wins. The Gorges Valley on the Chogoria route is one of the most beautiful trekking landscapes in East Africa. Wildlife sightings include buffalo, hyrax, eagles, and sometimes even leopard tracks.
If you want bragging rights and a single-name summit, Kilimanjaro is the answer. If you want raw beauty, better value, and a more intimate mountain experience, Mount Kenya is hard to beat. We run guided 6-day Mount Kenya treks with all meals, porters, and park fees included.
