What to Pack for a Mount Kenya Climb
Mount Kenya's weather changes fast. You can start the morning in warm rainforest and end the afternoon in cold, windy alpine conditions. Packing the right gear keeps you safe, dry, and comfortable all the way to Point Lenana.
Start with layers. Bring moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece or down jacket, and a waterproof shell. Avoid cotton — it holds moisture and gets cold. A good pair of trekking pants with zip-off legs is ideal for the lower slopes.
Footwear is critical. Wear broken-in hiking boots with ankle support and grippy soles. The trails can be muddy, rocky, and steep. Pack thick wool socks plus a few pairs of liner socks to prevent blisters.
For the summit night, you will need a headlamp with extra batteries, warm gloves, a beanie, and a balaclava or neck gaiter. Temperatures near Point Lenana can drop below freezing, especially with wind chill.
Other essentials include a 2 to 3 liter hydration system, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, a small first-aid kit, trekking poles, and a sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C. We provide tents and sleeping mats, but bring your own bag if you prefer.
If you do not own all the gear, we can recommend rental shops in Nairobi. Our 6-day Mount Kenya trek includes porters, so you only carry a daypack. That makes the climb far more enjoyable, especially for first-time trekkers.
